ABOUT THE CLINTON RIVER TRAIL - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Clinton River Trail? It's a recreational trail on 15 miles of abandoned rail line through the heart of Oakland County, including the cities of Sylvan Lake, Pontiac, Auburn Hills, Rochester Hills and Rochester. It connects with the existing West Bloomfield trail to the west and the Macomb Orchard Trail to the east.

What is the ultimate vision/plan for the trail? You can download and read the Clinton River Trail Master Plan here (PDF format; 3.7 MB).

Is the trail open? It is for the most part though some of the surface hasn't been finished. Most road intersections have been developed, although there are still some that are currently under improvement. The Rochester Hills section of the trail will be periodically closed during the spring and summer of 2007 for surfacing.

Will the trail surface be paved or crushed limestone like the Paint Creek Trail? The segments within Sylvan Lake, the western end of Pontiac and Rochester will be crushed limestone. Auburn Hills has put reused asphalt on their section. The Rochester Hills segment will be a recycled asphalt surface.

How does the trail cross I-75 in Auburn Hills? M-DOT has built a new pedestrian bridge to replace the old railroad crossing.

What about the bridge over the Clinton River behind Rochester College? The river washed that bridge away. Rochester Hills rebuilt it during the summer of 2005.

Is there a newsletter about events and activities along the trail? Yes—The Friends of the Clinton River Trail produces a newsletter, Trailways, that offeres features and information about the trail. You can access the latest issue by clicking here.
